Tip :: Packing Suggestions for Ocellated Turkey Hunts

The following factors affect what you pack:

  • The weather is warm and humid both day and night.
  • The weather is cool enough at night for a bed sheet, but only one is furnished. Bring one with you.
  • The terrain is not steep, except in very few places.
  • The ground is dry, almost any kind of shoes is adequate
  • You may need to walk 1/2 mile to hunt but if you can't, we make other arrangements.
  • Flying insects are not abundant, but bring a repellent
  • In some locales there are a few small ticks.
  • You will stop at a store for beer and snacks as you depart Flores for camp.

The following items are suggested:

  • Lightweight camo hunting clothing and paraphernalia
  • T-shirts and short-sleeved shirts
  • Long-sleeved shirt--light weight, dark color or camo to hunt in
  • Socks--extras
  • Shoes--lightweight boots for hunting; light shoes or sandals in camp.
  • Lightweight poncho or rain gear
  • Binoculars
  • Small flashlight
  • Camera and film -- film should be at least 200 ISO because of shaded conditions
  • Cigarette lighter or matches
  • Photo copies of all documents (passport, tickets, and so on) packed separately from the originals.
  • Zip-lock bags
  • Toiletries (including bath soap)
  • Bed sheet (one will be furnished, but two are needed)
  • Bath towel and wash cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol (for ticks)
  • Medical -- prescriptions, band-aids, iodine, antibiotic cream, anti-diarrhea drug
  • Insect repellent with deet
  • A small piece of cloth for camo blind (if you like to use such, it will be useful in calling turkeys)
  • Moist towelettes
  • Knife -- be sure to pack it in your checked luggage, not carry-on
  • A cardboard box, flattened, to have your flat turkey skin packed in (36"x15"x2").
  • A heavy-duty garbage bag for your trophy skin
  • Cash for tips (about $60-$100 total; change to Guatemalan money at Flores airport)
  • Booze if you use it; beer if you use it

The following items are not needed:

  • Rubber boots
  • Winter clothing
  • Back pack
  • Sleeping bag
  • Supplies to prepare your trophy
  • Shotgun ammo (but you can bring ammo if you have some favorite)
